100 days of school! And calories and whining.

I have a 365 project on Instagram that I managed to totally screw up and be off by like 5 pictures.  Today should be 273/265, and it's only 267/365.  SO ANNOYING.  Luckily it's TBT, so I can just add a whole bunch of pics, but I don't understand where I got thrown off.

I freaking HATE the Whole30, and also I think I am eating too much.  I just added my breakfast up on My Fitness Pal, and it's 470 calories.  My lunch is 389.  But since I am not snacking and we're having polish sausage for dinner and that sounds AWFUL, I should be at 1100 for the day with calories left over for an apple after dinner.  I AM SO LUCKY.  But seriously, if I gain weight on this diet, I am going to be seriously pissed.  And!  I am easily eating 7-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day, so that's amazing.  And this is basically the caloric pattern I have been following all month-- my enthusiasm for this food wanes along with my optimism as the day progresses.

I think I seriously want to get a "Nevertheless, she persisted." tattoo.  Who knew the entire history of feminism could be summed up in 3 words?  Also, the #shepersisted hashtag kind of makes me ragey because the amazing part and the part that packs the context is "nevertheless."

I have never used the word "compliance" more than I have in the last 9 days because that's what the Whole30 calls foods that fit the plan.  They are compliant foods.  I HATE THAT WORD.  I hate its implications, and I hate the tone.  I don't want to be a compliant person!  I want to raise hell!  And also eat some goddamned barbecue sauce.

 And can you believe it;s the 100th day of school already?  Jack is a seriously cute old man, and FYI, a Stila eyeliner makes some good wrinkles.


  1. Hey Sarah! I'm a regular reader and very occasional commenter. I've done 3 rounds of the Whole30 since May and stayed mostly compliant in between. And lost 55 pounds, but that's not even at the top of the list. I'm going to pass along some unasked-for advice. You should not be hungry! If you are, eat. But eat a mini meal with protein, veg, and some fat. And then use that information and make your next meal bigger. I had to play around with amounts a lot to figure out what would keep me going for 4 hours or so. And because your writing is so relatable and filled with your voice, I feel like I know you when I don't, so I'm just going to say this like I know you: stop counting calories. Even just to see, for fun, to check, or whatever your brain is coming up with to justify it. Use these 30 days to get good at listening to your body to determine what you're going to eat. It is absolutely worth it, but it might not work if you spend the month hungry and panicked that you're ingesting over 1200 calories per day. This is an amazing accomplishment and runs so contrary to what we've been told about our bodies, the deprivation mindset necessary to be "healthy", etc.

    I'm doing reintroduction after my 3rd round right now, and I should not have reintroduced gluten on the same day DeVos was confirmed, because I have this feeling it made me a complete asshole to be around, but who knows if it was the wheat or the imminent collapse of our public education system? I'm reintroducing dairy tomorrow, which I have mostly avoided for almost a year, so hopefully I can assess it on its own terms, and not coupled with the rise of fascism in this country. But that seems like a lot to ask for, suddenly.

  2. I've been planning my 6th tattoo (the signature my mum used on every note/card/letter I ever received) for a while, just not sure where I want it. Today, out of the blue, I knew I was going to get a "Nevertheless, she persisted" tattoo. I come from a long line of strong women (I am 4th generation - ALL female - college graduate) and it makes me think of how their persistence helped me get where I am today. . . I just need to find the right place for it . . .

    I second the suggestion to stop counting calories! :) Gary Taubes goes into great detail in his books about how our bodies don't treat all calories equally.
