Actually? This is not my first blog post about a water bottle.

Because I am as basic as they come, I always lug a 40oz Stanley water bottle everywhere I go. I don't worry about the straw being exposed to germs. I try not to mind it spilling when it gets knocked over or when I am carrying eleventy billion things in my hands and lean forward and water pours from the straw. But! This is the second time that the handle has come off. Well, to be fair, the handle is not all the way off my second cup, but it is loose.

I watched The Today Show spot about overblown lead claims (there is lead in the cup to seal the vacuum part, but it doesn't come into contact with water/leak/poison anyone despite IG claims. And the whole thing is fascinating to me because the cup itself is like a hallmark of the pretty white mom in her pretty white home (as Sara Petersen would say), but then there are all these even more conservative IG influencers with their home lead test results and their super freaking tan faces screaming about NATURE and TOXINS (there's this whole WILD subset of conservative influencers who say skin cancer is a big pharma conspiracy-- the same people who take daily videos of themselves holding their mushroom coffee and walking barefoot in their yards because of the MAGIC of EARTH'S ELEMENTS and the SOLES OF THE FEET). The Stanley cup is one of those fascinating artifacts attacked from the left and the right-- but also a place where the venn diagram of liberal and conservative haters has a weird overlap), and I am not ditching Stanley because of the lead. It's more because the thing costs $50 and BREAKS. That's annoying. And! The warrantee is (purposefully??) hard to claim.

I love a 40oz water bottle. I love the straw. I love that it's trendy and that it fits in my cup holder in the car. But! I WANT IT TO LAST.

Soooooo. I bought an Owala one this weekend. It's so CUTE you guys. And! The company does limited release patterns which I am ALWAYS a sucker for. The 40oz one is really unwieldy, and it doesn't fit in a cupholder. BUT! It's leakproof, and the straw is inside, so I can forgive a lot. There's a leap day shamrock one coming out on, um, leap day, so I will maybe try the smaller size? (Nope-- not Irish. JUST A SUCKER FOR A LIMITED RELEASE YOU GUYS WHY AM I SO BASIC). And don't get me started on the Birthday ones next month...

Too big for me, though, huh?

I have transitioned the kids to cheapy Gatorade bottles for school because I don't care if I have to buy more and can buy a whole team pack of the squeeze ones LOL (these and these). The boys have Yeti straw tumblers, and Jack also has this Yeti which is pretty great. Ben likes Hydroflask for water (I do not) and Yeti for coffee.

What about you? Any faves we should try before I buy ten thousand Owalas?

  1. I used my Yeti for years for water. Now I have the leakproof Stanley and LOVE it (and use my old Yeti as my travel mug), but we'll see how it lasts. Eeks.

My kids love the Gatorade bottles, but A just bought a Stanley with her own money because they are all the rage. She drinks SO much water so I actually thought it was a great investment, trends or not.

  2. Did you see the SNL skit Big Dumb Cups? It's my favorite. (And both Annabel and I have Stanleys though mine is only a 20 oz!) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L2tUO2mp99Q

i have been using tervis water bottles for years (plus 20) and love them. I dont like straws, hard to clean and want to avoid the wrinkles in my mouth ;-) we have about 6-7 in the house, they are great for hot/cold drinks. the warranty is amazing. they sent me a new one once because it broke. Also, my daughters drop those poor bottles all the time and they do not break.

  4. 40 ounces is too big/heavy for me. I am weak! My grip strength is nothing. I have 20 ounce Zojirushi and I have had it for YEARS. It fits in the cup holder of my subcompact car. It keeps things SUPER HOT and SUPER COLD. It is not dishwasher safe, which is maybe a dealbreaker for other people, but not for me because my husband washes it. (LOL) It does not have a straw because I am grossed out by straws. It has never leaked on me. I am basically obsessed with it. Also, it's orange.

    1. oooooh these looks great-- they appear to have the same-ish lid and mouthpiece as owala. is there a straw inside?

    2. No straw. Straws are disgusting and impossible to clean. LOL. I'm a real treat to be around.

  5. We like the Costco ThermoFlask. We have both straw and non-straw ones. I like the straw for drinking in the car and the other to elsewhere. On my busy days, I pack three of them! (Our city water is not the greatest, but we have a good water system at home.)

    2. I second the ThermoFlask - we use the no straw ones and they’re great!

  6. I like the klean kanteen bottle for travel because it's light weight. I use a travel mug for the car that has a flip top - i think it's a thermos brand. Other than that, the large water bottles that have come my way as free promotional items from companies sit in the cupboard. I got a giant faux-stanley (but without a straw) from a company last summer and maybe I'll use it on the next road trip but it's too big for regular use (for me).

    1. I forgot about Klean Kanteen! Harry and Jack both had these, and I loved how light they were! I did not love how they got misshapen when dropped and became wobbly, but that was more an us problem than a bottle design issue.

My favorite coffee travel mug for coffee is from Kinto (https://kinto-usa.com/). Impulse bought it a local coffee shop but I've had it for a few years now and love it. My favorite water bottle is also Kleen Kanteen. I like that they are light and fit easily in my work bag. I was gifted a Swell bottle and did not love it (all of the paint peeled off almost immediately). I did know I would have this much to say about drinkware!

And the intersection of "no sunscreen bc natural and crunchy" and "no sunscreen because god" is wild.

  8. I have tried fancy water bottles (haaate the Hydroflask) and non-fancy water bottles and consistently come back to a) the cheapo Contigo water bottles (20 oz, with straw, because I always spill on myself if there's no straw), and b) an enormous old-school Nalgene (32 oz, I think?) with no straw but I have another lid for it and I think that one at least has a spout? I can't do the stainless steel thing, so that eliminates a bunch of them. And I like my water room temp, so insulated doesn't really matter, either! Clearly, I'm not up on the most recent trends. ;)

  10. I use a 22 oz simple modern water bottle and I love it. I had to go to Amazon to look up the name of it, because it's SM and I couldn't remember what it stood for. I kept wanting to say Simple Minds, but no- that's a music group from my era. Duh. I bought these same water bottle for the kids and they do lose them, well Reg does, but mostly they work great. I haven't had a leaking issue, but I keep it upright. They don't break the bank. Water stays so cold in there. Curly got a Stanley from a friend for her b-day, which is nice. I refuse to spend money on something that trendy. I assume it has a few flaws and that it won't live up to the hype. I cannot tell you how happy I am to hear that you find them imperfect. I mean, I wish YOURS didn't break, but at the end of the day the price for these things is cray cray.

  11. I have an even bigger stanley cup that I only use at work because it is so huge. I live under a rock so didn't know anything about the lead claims. At home we refill the same gatorade bottles over and over and over again until they start to get gross and then we recycle them. I have heard that the stanley is all the rage w/ middle schools or later elementary and I don't know how they can handle hauling the cup back and forth as it's SO HEAVY AND BULKY. But I love it for work.

  12. I have an insulated Camelbak water bottle that I *love* because it's the only thing I found that will keep my water ice cold for over 24 hours! I do want to be a basic girly with a Stanley, though... one of these days!

  13. I have not yet really embraced the big water bottle, can you believe it? I see them everywhere.
