Halloween Wrap Up

Something to know about me: I always have house envy. Like, no matter how great and perfect and cozy and wonderful my house is, I always want MOAR house.

When we lived in an apartment, I could not wait to buy a condo. When we did finally buy a townhouse, I couldn’t wait to have a house in a neighborhood. Now? I want a giant house (which is not happening before the kids go to college and then our house will feel giant because there won’t be any kids— my rational mind knows this, and, yet).

ANYWAY, I bring this up to note that when we had a townhouse/condo, I was SO SAD on Halloween because we really couldn’t trick or treat our neighborhood. We went to community events with the boys and went to friends’ neighborhoods instead, but I felt like a Halloween fraud and just wanted to give my kids the same ToT experience I had as a kid— swarms of costumed children lightly supervised collecting pancreas-shattering amounts of candy by just gathering friends and stepping outside their own front door. IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK FOR??

No— not in our current cozy perfect house, anyway. We have THE BEST trick or treating neighborhood— truly a fall dream come true.

Is it weird that our high school senior is handing out airplane bottles of whiskey to adults while his grandparent-age parents walk their 3 year-old around the block? MAYBE. Is it awesome that our high school sophomore is in charge of his middle school and elementary school siblings? DEFINITELY.

(I told Dorothy and Cooper that next year, they can have a Halloween party— or at least use our house as a home base to eat pizza and meet up before and after, but this year it was fun to watch them giddy with the thought of no parental supervision and SO MUCH CANDY on their horizon.)

(I only bought full size candy bars because I thought it would stop me from eating candy the night of and the days leading up to the big event— AND I WAS RIGHT!! Unfortch, the rest of the fam had no reservations, and I bought 5 boxes of Costco candy bars because I had to restock. LOL LOL LOL.)

Dorothy had one more dance dress up day, and she went classic pig:

Harry decided at 10:45 on Monday that he needed a costume for school

He’s an honors student, you guys.

NOT TO BE OUT DONE:

We went through 120 full size candy bars in 90 minutes

Ben went to Target, but the candy was GONE, so he got chips and fruit snacks and Dum Dums. Those were gone by 7:45!!!

Next year, I will do a better job of hiding the candy ahead of the big night ** eye roll**

MINNIE WAS ADORABLE:

Everyone had a blast, including Harry and the friends he roped into answering the door. I LOVE HALLOWEEN.

  1. This was fun to read :) Love the costumes and someone served us hot chocolate with Bailey's while we were trick-or-treating (the kids got candy and mine were a bit miffed the hot chocolate was NOT FOR THEM) which was delightful, so I bet your house is an adult FAV!

  2. A good trick or treating neighborhood is so wonderful! I am laughing about how much candy you went through though - and the chips and fruit snacks?! Wow! We overbought candy this year because we are used to a million kids coming through but the new neighborhood doesn’t seem to have as many kids. Your kids are all so cute! Great costumes! And how fun that Dorothy got to dress up so much for dance.

  3. I wonder if your weather was beautiful or something. I would think our weather was sort of similar - and it was COLD here. Snowing! We had a handful of trick or treaters. I've learned my lesson and I did hide my candy well. It also helps that Tank is away at college and Lad moved out - two of our candy thieves with no impulse control.

This is a hoot. I love your description of who was in charge of what - senior handing out booze, etc. Your house IS the fun house. Your neighborhood sounds super fun.

I don't necessarily envy other houses (I am I def do, but more because I wonder who keeps friends' houses so clean and orderly and buying a different house won't really solve that). I do have 2nd house envy. I want a lake house, or more accurately a house in South Bend so I can stop paying out the ass to tailgate with Mini and friends. Not.gonna.happen. But - it's fun to dream and scroll the listings as if it is possible.

    1. Cold AND snowy!! WI kids love their candy. IO would ADORE a second house— either in the WI north woods or on Hilton Head… a girl can dream

  4. I am so envious of your trick or treating neighborhood. We did our house UP with decorations and got zero trick or treaters. Meanwhile, in other neighborhoods across town, they got hundreds. Womp womp. I blame the church behind our house that holds trunk or treat at the same time as official ToT. Get bent, stupid church. I am unreasonably upset about the rise in trunk or treat. Get off my lawn, new Halloween traditions!

    1. LOL LOL LOL get bent stupid church. The school in our hood has trunk or treat but on a different night, and I think it encourages school families to come back for ToT’ing

  5. FULL SIZE BARS FANCY LADY TWINNING!
I would 100% be there for airplane whiskey, love it. Our old house was a Destination for ToTers, because of all the decorations and maybe also my chocolate bar generosity. Here we had three, but I consider that a huge win since there are only two kids on our entire agricultural road.

  6. It is amazing how enthusiastic you are about Halloween. It is just not my kind of Holiday but than I didn't grow up with that tradition here in Germany. And I cant remember that we did anything for Halloween the year I was in the US. So i guess i enjoy it while reading your blog.

  7. Sounds like you guys really enjoyed the night! I was pretty disappointed in how few trick or treaters we got- we used to get more but it's dwindled over the years. Of course you guys deserved to get a ton, giving out FULL SIZED CANDY BARS!
And yes- Minnie's costume is adorable!

  9. Wow, I live vicariously through you and your kids and your house with all the full size candy bars! I love all the costumes and Minnie looked most adorable as Yoda :)
(People park on our street to go to the bigger houses a block over for the full size candy bars LOL).

    1. I love being a destination neighborhood. Neighbors complain about all the people driving in, but I love it.

  10. "He's an honors student, you guys" lolol. I have this thing where I answer the door and get too flustered to notice the kids' costumes, so I made an effort this year. The kids have always been so cute and polite and fun. Our neighbourhood was great to trick or treat in when our kids were younger, we only get a fraction of the kids now but it's still enjoyable.

  11. You live in one of those magical Halloween-y neighborhoods! We got SEVEN trick-or-treaters this year and it was such a bummer.
