DISNEY WORLD!!

It's my favorite place to take the kids, and this was our FOURTH trip. Surprisingly, I didn't grow up going to Disney, and our family vacation in 2014 was my very first time. I WAS HOOKED. Listen, the Magic Kingdom is ... magic. We had the most fun at WDW, and that's hard to say about any place you are traveling to with 4 kids under the age of 8. We liked it so much that we surprised the kids with a Chrismukkah trip that same year, and we returned in the summer of 2015,

Somehow, SEVEN YEARS passed without a trip to see the mouse, so when we realized we could see Ben's parents for Thanksgiving and squeeze in a Disney drive-by, we were SO EXCITED.

This was our first time staying in a moderate resort instead of a deluxe resort, and I have mixed feelings. On one hand, we were barely in our rooms at all, and our resort had a really fun pool. Our first day at Disney was just a day to hang out at the hotel and explore the grounds, and Port Orleans Riverside had plenty to explore.

We also really really liked our princess rooms, and we were happy that they were adjoining, even though we would have been just fine with rooms close to each other. Harry and Jack would have preferred a room with a pull-out couch or chaise, something our rooms at the Beach Club and the Grand Floridian always had. There are rooms at Riverside with pull-outs included, but we opted for the princess rooms instead because we knew Dorothy and Minnie would love them.

Something I really like is how committed to their themes Disney hotels are. These rooms were quirky little delights.

BUT-- the deluxe resorts are SO MUCH BETTER LOCATED at Disney. To just jump on a ferry and be at the park is a dream. I didn't like driving to Magic Kingdom, parking, and then taking the ferry. Also! When we left the park at the end of the day, the ferry to the parking lot was broken. I did NOT want to ride the monorail (claustrophobia and also COVID concerns), so we took a boat to the Polynesian and walked to the parking lot from there.

Next time (If there is a next time-- I feel very sated re: Disney), we will either stay at a deluxe resort on the ferry line or in walking distance to MK/Epcot OR we will be better about making good dining reservations. If you have breakfast at Chef Mickey's at the Contemporary, for example, you can park there and walk to MK. Or if you have breakfast at Beach Club, you can park and walk to Epcot (which we did). Polynesian, Grand Floridian, Fort Wilderness, etc, all have restaurants and good proximity to the parks.

We did not pay for Genie+, but we did buy tickets to Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party, meaning we got access to the park after it closed and we had early access as well. This meant we rode all of the rides we wanted, more than once, with not a lot of waiting.

Because we were only there for 2 days, we decided not to get park hopper tickets, so we went to 2 parks, one each day. I think this was a good choice since our hotel was not connected by Disney transportation (besides the bus, which, not during a pandemic for me, thanks), and getting around was harder. BUT ALSO, it is really nice to spend a day at a park and then have dinner and fireworks and a couple of rides somewhere else, so I **think** we will always get park hopper tickets going forward.

Our previous Disney trips have always included the Disney meal plan, so we could treat the whole thing like an all-inclusive experience and not pay attention to the mount of money we were hemorrhaging at the park. This time, we did not do that and the meals ARE SO EXPENSIVE MY GOD. At least $100 any time we had a meal or a snack. That is something I would rather not know, so the meal plan is maybe something I’d like to get again. The kids throwing away 1/2 full $4 waters really got to me after about 36 hours.

In some ways, it was harder to be at the parks with 4 big kids and a baby than it was with 2 little kids and 2 toddlers, which is wild because I don’t like rides, so it was NBD for me to hang with Min and ride the teacups SEVEN TIMES, and everyone else could ride with a sibling or with Ben and his parents. It **might** be because Minnie is used to being our sun, and when the day did not completely revolve around her, she was not as resilient as I would have liked her to be.

Still, toddler meltdowns aside, we had a magically fun time, and I am so glad we made the trip.

I uploaded these in chronological order, but Blogger lives to destroy my narrative thread. So. In random order:

Ben was like REALLY excited to meet Cinderella

Dorothy rode Space Mountain first thing, and it scared the heck out of her, but she also loved it. The rest of the time, this was her roller coaster face.

Mulan was Minnie’s very favorite princess. She actually snuggled up and almost fell asleep on her chest, which started out cute, but then got kind of weird/attachment disorder-y.

Hotel lobby tree- so pretty!

After you meet princesses at MK, the line empties out to a mercy store OF COURSE. Minnie was delighted with her Cinderella jewelry.

Nighttime at Epcot— we almost made the fireworks.

Comparing their new stuffies

LOL

Magic Kingdom tree!

Minnie LOVED the MK Christmas parade

Trying really hard to make the Epcot fireworks

The kids LOVED our Cape May character breakfast. Also! They haven’t been to a buffet since before the panny

Belle!! Ben’s mom and I had a really good time strolling Epcot with the girls for  Princess meet and greets.

Minnie and Dorothy are not familiar with Elena, but they loved meeting her anyway.

Ready to go on our second morning. I loved that we all wore WI shirts, and we got lots of GO BUCKY and ON WISCONSIN shouts.

Cooper LOVED finding all the holiday Olafs throughout Epcot’s world showcase, and he took his scavenger hunt map really seriously.

The excitement on the ferry heading to MK at 7am was palpable

Minnie looking through the doors of the hotel lobby moments before she tumbled down a short  flight of outdoor stairs and skinned her legs, not just knees.

Coop turned his completed holiday tradition map in for a cute little prize.

Prince Charming, too!

Minnie amusing herself in the princess line at MK

RAPUNZEL!!

The kids loved the hotel pool

Cooper bathed in the light from Dorothy’s ears.

Statue face

We sure did buy ears and wear them

The three of us cooled our heels at Epcot while everyone else rode the new Guardians of the Galaxy roller coaster, which they declared THE BEST RIDE EVER.

Day one, fresh as daisies

Minnie LOVED the Barnstormer roller coaster

CHEESE

Princess line antics

OMG OMG MINNIE MOUSE

When Minnie and I took this carousel selfie, she saw herself on the screen and realized she was missing a clip-on earring. WE FOUND IT thanks to a super nice ride operator.

Non-licensed drivers love this one. Everyone else is kind of meh

I took pictures of the kids in the lobby while everyone else checked in

This was from a stand that sold hot dogs and turkey legs and they both sort of tasted like hot dogs.

Minnie was losing it, so I gave her an ice cream bar and a stroller nap.

POOOOOOL

Clearly the Minnie/Minnie thing is not getting old for me.

The princesses also thought Minnie was cute.

Spoiler: this one made our Christmas card

WE LIKED THE POOL, OK?

Literally wore these like for serious.

Teacups, pre-ears

We walked all the way around the world for Chinese food and then Jack was like actually the orange chicken at the mall is better.

SNOW!!

Minnie, out

What are they even eating?

Daisy!!

A personal hero of Minnie’s

OK, let’s take a hot second to talk about the hotel.

Minnie and Dorothy seriously got a kick out of all the princess touches like the beds, the portraits, the Aladdin’s lamp faucets in the bathroom, etc.

Also! Our rooms were a study in contrast. Ben, Harry, and Jack trashed theirs— TRASHED IT

But Dorothy, Cooper, Minnie, and I kept our spotless

Probably because everyone wanted to hang out with Ben and his snacks and his pizza deliveries.

But seriously, Disney. WHO THOUGHT THESE BATHROOM “DOORS” were a good idea?!

Besides Minnie, I mean.

ONE MORE THING! Minnie loves a particular episode of Mickey Mouse Club House (season 4, episode 9) that features Minnie Mouse as Cinderella. Minnie-rella. In fact, Minnie-rella is her favorite Disney character. Only it’s NOT A CHARACTER, but that was the person she was most excited to see. As soon as we got to our hotel, A Disney bus emblazoned with 50th Anniversary Mickey and Minnie pulled into the parking lot, and Minnie lost her darn mind screaming MINNIE-RELLA because 50th anniversary Minnie is wearing a blue ball gown THANK GOD. Disney magic for sure.

Behold, the Minnie-rella song:

Flu, eh?

Ok, but really. THINGS HAVE BEEN ROUGH SINCE WE GOT BACK.

I really love my job, and most of the time, it is so fun and engaging that it doesn’t even feel like work, but the penultimate week of the semester is not one of those times. So, like, things are busy and have been since we got home. Plus, I have done some really stupid stuff like schedule a once-a-semester evening event for this week of all weeks. And also!! I have my seniors doing presentations this week and next week, but my class only meets once a week (it is a hybrid class and also meets online). So! That means I have to fit 40 student presentation in, in two 75-minute class periods. Which MIGHT have worked but! I sent a Google Doc for them to sign up for a presentation time and forgot to limit editing permissions, and 33 people signed up for the las day of class which is … not mathematically possible. We figured it out, but extra headaches, you know? Plus grading— all of the grading— and so many class administration issues for the giant course I direct that crop up at the end of the semester anyway.

ALSO THERE WAS VACATION LAUNDRY.

Plus, nothing makes you realize your kids do a ton of activities like spending 10 days not doing activities and then immediately re-entering society. YIKES.

Then there’s the YUGE holiday season looming and me with barely any gifts bought. Minnie and I spent our first day home putting out all the Christmas decorations, but there’s literally no way we can get a tree before 12/10. **cringe face emojis**

BUT THE ICING ON THE CAKE IS THIS

She feels AWFUL and has a really high fever that comes down to about 101 with Tylenol and ibuprofen round the clock.
GAH. Cross you fingers that the rest of us stay healthy, friends.

I owe you vacay updates, but today I am too grumpy

We had so much fun at Disney and in Florida with Ben's parents, and I want to tell you all about it, but I am feeling way way way too grumpy this morning. EVEN THOUGH MY DISHWASHER is fixed, and I am back to running it 3 times a day (hmmm ... why do we go through appliances so fast?).

Things I am grumpy about today

1. I had to cancel my 8am massage this morning because i could not find my benny card, and the whole reason I was even getting the massage in the first place is that we have tons of FSA funds to use up. AND I don't even really LIKE the massages at my HMO so I didn't want to pay for it and submit reimbursement-0- like, that would have outweighed the benefits of the massage. And yes I could have just paid for it, but I would rather get a spa massage than an HMO massage if I am paying real money. Yes, I understand that my FSA is also real money, but it's money I already spent, so it feels fake. And honestly? Reading all of this, I should have just had the gd massage, especially since I ended up doing my makeup at work (because I expected to start the say with my face in a massage pillow and I WANT A MASSAGE). One more and! These HMO massages are super cheap ($53 for 60 mins) so they fill up SUPER FAST. Every day, the schedule for 45 days in the future opens up, so it's like winning Taylor Swift tickets each time I get an appointment and WHY DID I EVEN CANCEL?
2. There's, like, a massive ADHD med shortage nation-wide, and this SUCKS if you are, say, a high school kid about to take the ACT who could really use your ADHD meds ...
3. Dorothy and Coop were exposed to the actual flu at hockey this weekend, and Dorothy has a cough and a fever today BOOOOOOOOOOOOO

4. It's cold.
5. The grading, It has buried me.
6. My period has come twice in a row after 16 days and has lasted an entire Hanukkah each time. WHY. WHAT. (Also, this sort of happened last year, too, and I got all the way checked out (there was dye and ultrasound and biopsy) and was offered a really disappointing maybe it's perimenopause here's some birth control, so I am not, like, worried about it, but BOY DOES IT SUCK.

SO. I have thoughts on vacation, traveling with a big family, Disney, and making holiday magic, but today is NOT THE DAY.
(PIGTAILS!)

Archive UPDATES

Wow! You all asked some EXCELLENT questions about my old posts, and I sure do have follow ups.

First of all, do not worry about little Thanksgiving me. I was embarrassed for sure, but it was NBD and I got a new plate of food. Breaking the table did not put a damper on my eating, and I was the only kid in the library at the kid table, so I mostly was able to keep my fall to myself, despite having a blouseful of yams. Until I got a blog.

Ohhhhh the "water breaking" story. YOU GUYS. I got a lot of mileage out of that one and performed it in 2016 as part of Listen to Your Mother.

Ben is OK. Ironically, HARRY (who does still love thteak) is the one with a heart problem. Ben gets a racing heart when he is dehydrated and has since figured that out and drinks tons more water. Still has high cholesterol but not toooooo high, and we FOR SURE still eat cheese on the regular. Pretty sure it is required in WI.

Oh, our sweet little baby house. We definitely still live there, and even though there are 5 bedrooms, we are a liiiiiiiittle crammed in. Harry and Jack would like to not share a room anymore, which makes sense because they aren't elementary schoolers anymore (heck, Jack was a PRESCHOOLER). Also, except for paint, we haven't changed anything, and things are starting to NEED TO BE CHANGED. And! We need new mattresses! And our appliances are starting to show thaqeir age. That's the problem with a brand new house and brand new everything to go inside it-- it all shows its age at the same time.

I have complained about my weight off an on since the start of this blog, but a couple of years ago, I just stopped doing weird diets (WHOLE 30 I AM LOOKING AT YOU) and found what the gurus call food freedom. I eat what I want when I want it and generally don't worry about food at all ever. I am heavier than I am at my thinnest but well under my heaviest weight. **shrug** It's pretty great. But also I still want to be smaller. Hegemony is a pain in the butt.

November: What I Read

I am SO CLOSE to reading 122 actual books (not audio books). I need to knock out 2 more, and I have 3 BOTMs and some great library holds, so CROSS YOUR FINGERS. I had some excellent reads this month-- not always great literature, but usually a great time.

Not Amazing, if I Am Being Honest (AND I AM)

All Your Perfects by Colleen Hoover: I CANNOT STOP. **Audio

The Family Remains by Lisa Jewell: I wanted to, but I just did not love this book. **2022

Also Not Amazing but Entertaining AF

Under Currents by Nora Roberts: Total soap opera, and I loved every word-- a great back drop to random housework. **Audio

It's not Summer Without You  and We'll Always Have Summer by Jenny Han: I am hooked on this trilogy, and Dorothy and I have started watching The Summer I Turned Pretty  together. **Audio

The Prisoner by BA Paris: Fast-paced but some big problems LOL. **2022

It Starts With Us by Colleen Hoover: OK LISTEN. I LIKED THIS ONE. **2022

Series I Heart

The Kiss Curse by Erin Sterling: Loved it-- these witch romances are too cute. Also! Erin Sterling is RACHEL HAWKINS! #mindblown **2022

Livid by Patricia Cornwell: WHY can't Kay just be a sleuthing medical examiner again? The past 4 or 5 Scarpetta books have had really weird plots featuring people from Kay's past that we just now meet but who were really important figures in her life but have never popped up in 20 books. It is a really weird way to introduce side characters. Not a huge fan. But also, Kay Scarpetta forever, you know? **2022 **Audio

The Winners by Fredrik Backman: This took me FOREVER to read, which make sense because it's HUGE. But I also just could not get all the way into it, even though I am in the middle of hockey season, an I loved the other 2 in the series.**2022

Faves

Our Missing Hearts by Celeste Ng: It is my third favorite book of hers, but that means it's still an excellent read. **2022

The Most Likely Club by Elyssa Friedland: This was a charming delight. **2022 **Audio

Killers of a Certain Age by Deanna Raybourn: I LOVED THIS BOOK. I read actual literature this month, and this book won my heart. You should read it and then think about how sexist and stupid it is that there's not a movie in the works. **2022
