5 on a Friday— Baking, Contagion, Books, Danger, and Flour

1.Baking: I made my first from-scratch brownies of the year, and the batter was super ugly. The brownies were good, though, but not great. I also might have made the perfect cookie by just using the good old back-of-the-bag Tollhouse recipe. In my kitchen, I have the stuff for my favorite granola bars and also ginormous blueberry muffins, so there’s no end in sight.

 2. Contagion: We went to a super full Little Gym class on Wednesday and ate a snack inside a coffee shop. Then on Thursday, we got to the library at the tail end of story time, and all the toys were moist and germy. I predict a virus in about 3 days. Longer if it’s the VID, natch.

3. Books. I have read several but only 1 from 2023, and it was SO GOOD and you should READ IT
4. Danger. Minnie is using her kitchen as a jungle gym, and it just cannot possibly end well.

5. Flour. Cooper called me at 9:20 on Thursday and asked if I could please bring 2 cups of flour to school for a science experiment. So I did. In my jammies. With my Teletubby.

  1. Thank you for the visual of Minnie standing in the kitchen sink! Too funny! All those little gym classing are paying off - look at her mobility skills put to (questionable - ha) use!

Brownies are one food that never seems to "look" pretty but still taste amazing!

Thanks for the rec on The Villa - I will add it to my holds list!!

  2. I 100% believe that the OG Tollhouse chocolate chip cookie recipe is the best. Hands down. Made better if you make the dough with room temp butter and egg and then chill the dough in the fridge or freezer for hours and hours. Those cookies are glorious and the Tollhouse people obviously know what they're doing!

    1. YES! I can never let the dough chill long enough because someone always eats it right out the the fridge and it’s not even always me.

  3. This made me giggle. Now that break is over, my kid is back at school and swim practice and I can just picture ALLLLLL the germs collecting all over her all day long. Fun times.

I am curious about the Hawkins book. I read one of her books this summer and liked it but didn't love it... but I enjoyed her writing enough that I should give her another shot!

    1. SO MANY GERMS. I like Hawkins a lot— and she has a romance pen name (Erin Sterling), and I like her, too. She’s a feminist gothic writer, and that’s absolutely my jam.
