A winer break trip is THE BEST! When you don't like to fly, though, you have LIMITED OPTIONS FOR GOOD WEATHER. Ben and I have given ourselves a firm deadline to find an awesome place in the WI north woods for next year OR just book this same week in South Carolina, though, because the allure of skipping the part of break where everyone is home and bored is TOO GREAT.
(Seriously-- a big house with a hot tub and a fire pit on a frozen lake would be SUPER FUN)
ANYWAY. The drive down was lovely, and we OF COURSE stopped at a Buc-ees in Tennessee and also in Bloomington, IL to see my mom just DAYS before her retirement.
We stopped for the night in Richmond, Kentucky at a Home2Suites. We got 2 suites next to each other, and Dorothy and Minnie were the only people to share a bed. Cooper and Jack slept on pull out couches, and Ben, Harry, and I got queens to ourselves. We left before breakfast, but the pool was fine. The gym was fine. And there was excellent lobby coffee at 5am. We tired to stay in that same chain on the way home, but we opted for a Hilton Garden Inn instead because of timing.
And! Made it to the Sea Pines beach club before sunset!
Other highlights:
1. Dolphin Dash 5 k on Sea Pines beach
(I got my same time as Thanksgiving exactly, and Ben was faster. He could have been eve faster, but he stayed with me out of some weird sense of loyalty, but I was like dude this is my favorite place in the world and I am running alongside DOLPHINS (literal dolphins just frolicking next to us the whole time) ENJOY YOURSELF. SO he did.)
2. Day trip to Savannah
3. Our excellent Marriott condo right by Harbour Town-- steps from our favorite bakery

Wow, Minnie really foresaw the bat thing! I love a winter break but I don't think we've ever taken one at this time of year - usually we would go somewhere warm in Feb or March when the kids were younger.
ReplyDeleteThis trip looks awesome, I am personally jealous of Cooper's backflip (always wanted to do that, I have accepted it will not happen), and JELLYCATS OMG. Reminds me of when we used to do Amelia Island over Christmas or NY - love a winter beach!!
ReplyDeleteYes to getting away from the cold! If your kids get to go in an outdoor pool in January, you are living your life right!
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year!
Minnie should be smug. Bats are NOT COOL. I'm on her side. #TeamMinnie
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness this looks like the literal best!!
ReplyDeleteThe bat situation - UGH. Gold stars to Minnie.
What a fun getaway for you all. Winter break is way too long (IMO, I am sure the teachers need the long break but it's not ideal for the kids). We can't travel as it's a busy time for Phil. I could go somewhere without Phil but don't really care to do that, at least not until they are at better ages. Will cannot share a room with Paul (he got up as least 20 times the one night they tried to share a room at my parents the weekend after Christmas so we gave up and I slept w/ Paul and Phil took one for the team and slept w/ Will) so we are a ways away from a hotel being at all pleasant.... But I am glad this works out so great for your family! It's nice to return to the same place over and over again. A WI getaway could be fun, too, but the change in weather is a huge perk of SC!
ReplyDeleteNice to find some warm sunshine this time of year, excellent. I like that you and Ben were both under your school banners, and wow, bats! I like to think that I would understand that they are harmless and keep my cool, but I suspect that would not be the case AT ALL.
ReplyDeleteThis looks like so much fun. The bat story is hilarious. As usual you and your people look like you bring the fun wherever you go and I love living vicariously through you. (ah the beach!). Happy 2026!
ReplyDeleteAw, I love this! You guys have the best vacations! Love all the family time. I was wondering if it was warm enough to swim- looks like it was!
ReplyDeleteUgh- school starts tomorrow for us and I'm depressed about it. I'll bet you were happy to have everyone go back though!
