100 Books: December Update and my Top 11 BOOKS OF THE YEAR!

I am so happy I resolved to read 100 books this year.  I read some of the best new fiction and memoirs on the market, and I read a ton of weird, old crap from the library!  A perfect combination.  I am ending the year with 116 books read, plus Dr. Sleep and Holidays on Ice taunting me from my bookshelf.  I have 6 overdue library books that I hope to replace with new ones this week and a new Lisa Gardner coming out on 1-6.  What I am saying is I hope to get this year off to a good literary start.  I am not going to read 100 books, though.  Without the excuse of pregnancy and a constantly nursing infant, it just won't happen.  I am working on a reasonable number-- I am thinking 52-- a book a week?

I am not sure why I said I was at 109 last month-- clearly it was 111.  But who's counting?  Oh yeah.  ME.

5 books to round out the project:

Maxed Out: American Moms on the Brink by Katrina Alcorn:  I really liked this book, I think.  For awhile I didn't because she claims she's writing about all working moms, but it's really a memoir.  And then she does try to generalize, but I think she is so blinded by race and class privilege that she can't, not really.  She IS describing the experiences of a working mom, but not all of us.

5 Summers by Una LaMarche:  I apparently ordered this through interlibrary loan, but I have no idea why because it was a YA book.  But a good YA book!  And I didn't get that it was YA until midway through-- before that I was like why are they getting so worked up about kissing a boy?  Oh! Because they're 16.  Gotcha.

Grace: A Memoir by Grace Coddington:  Seriously, read this. She is the fashion director of Vogue and is in her 70s and is completely fabulous.   It is not the best written book, but you guys.  She drops the best fashion names ever!  Then, after you read it, watch the documentary The September Issue and see Grace and Anna Wintour in action.

Margaret Fuller: A New American Life by Megan Marshall:  This book is a brilliant biography.  Her attention to detail is overwhelming-- most of the book comes from Fuller's correspondence with her legendary transcendentalist friends.  Fuller was brilliant and unconventional; she grappled with the same kinds of problems working moms face today, and she died tragically.  A GREAT READ.

May We Be Forgiven by A.M. Holmes:  I finished this tonight, and it was wonderful-- hilarious touching, fast-paced, well-written, pretty much the perfect way to cap off my year.

And here's my top 11 from the year:

-->
11.  Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn
10.  Night Film by Marisha Pessl
9.  Margaret Fuller: A New American Life by Megan Marshall
8.  The Roundhouse by Louise Erdrich
7.  The Fault in Our Stars by John Green
6.  Let's Explore Diabetes With Owls by David Sedaris
5.  May We Be Forgiven by A.M. Holmes
4.  Flight Behavior by Barbara Kingsolver
3.  Elsewhere by Richard Russo
2.  Where'd You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple
1.  The Interestings by Meg Wolitzer

I felt kind of cheesy including Gone Girl, but what the hell-- it really was great.  I also think that The Interestings might seem like a lackluster pick, but it was the story that stayed with me the most.  This has been a terrific project-- I feel accomplished, and I enjoyed every moment I spent reading books, even the terrible ones (books, that is-- the moments, from poolside to the couch to the passenger seat to the floor of the toyroom to Dorothy's recliner were all lovely).

Christmas!

I am SO SICK. Without meds, my fever is 102.7.  Last night I slept in flannel pants, giant fuzzy slipper socks, a long-sleeved thermal shirt, a sweater, and a hoody, and I was FREEZING.  Today, I am in bed.  By myself.  Except for the next couple of hours because Ben has a dentist appointment and a doctor appointment.  Luckily, all I have to do is feed everyone lunch and put the babies down for nap.  Surely the big boys can occupy themselves with toys.

Harry woke up at 2:37 thinking it was 5:37.  He went back to bed but was up for real by 5:30 bringing Jack and a boatload of Christmas cheer with him.  He couldn't NOT TOUCH stuff.  I mean, seriously.
It killed them to pose for a picture.  KILLED THEM.
Stockings while the babies slept.
New hats

Once Cooper opened the trucks and trains he asked for, he was pretty much over it and needed Ben to open all his shit up pronto.  He left more than half of his gifts wrapped under the tree which drove Harry and Jack mad-- they could not understand it.
Harry loved everything, even the random stuff that was supposed to be a sticking stuffer but ended up wrapped because we had unequal numbers of gifts.
Trucks.  We should not have worried about even numbers becasue Cooper cared not after he got trucks.
Jack is he sweetest kid and every easy to buy for since he loves everything.  He got lots of Barbies and My Little Ponies, which is adorable.
Santa brought Skylanders Swap Force for all 3 boys to share.  We'll see how that goes.
The boys opened Dorothy's gifts, too, because unwrapped presents freak them out.
Like pulling teeth to get a picture
Self timer, FTW!
Erm,
Ah, Coop.
Modeling his new hat.
MAN DOWN
At Ben's parents for round 2
So hard to get those boys to hold still
Harry discovered his love of fondue
Cousins!
Oh, Coop
A cotton candy machine-- awesome!
Ben was surrounded
Jack was happy to have someone to play Barbies with
He wants this dollhouse for his birthday-- awesome-- because I will totally play with that.
Grabbed my lens cap
She loved standing at the table.
I love her sweet round cheeks.

Before the kidnado
Christmas Eve
These stick-on mustaches might have been the biggest hit of the day
Ben is super into his vintage Polaroid, and he has gotten some great shots!
Seriously.  THIS DRESS.
Jack is an equal opportunity player-- Sophia the First castle right next to the Batcave
Ugh, you guys.  I took Tylenol about an hour ago, and I got all sweaty, so I took my temp, and it;s still 100.1.  And my solo-parenting shift is coming up in 45 minutes.  WISH ME LUCK.

I am sick with some sort of virus right now, but I wil use lots of exclamation points to communicate my general perkiness

We have had SO MUCH HOLIDAY FREAKING CHEER.  Yesterday, as you can tell from the photo above, was COOKIE DAY which might be Harry's favorite day of the year.  But wait!  I'll tell you about that in a minute.

Let's start with the best baby outfit EVAR
Here is Jack;s kindergarten party for which I made ridiculous cupcakes.  It was also teddy bear sleepover day, and this is the bear Jack brought to class.  Subtle.
2 things:  I am wearing that scarf RIGHT NOW and also I apparently did not comb my hair.
 Cooper:  GIANT MESS
Ben had the fantastic idea of using this Pier One thing that was already in our front hallway to hold Christmas cards:  GENIUS.
Cooper loves to wear Dorothy's bows and shoes.
As you can tell from the wave, he was going to work, duh.
Non-ironic holiday sweater for Harry's class party.  As soon as I walked in, a little girl said , "Oooh, your sweater is so pretty."
I brought the stuff for fruit snowmen-- they made their own-- it was a snack AND an activity
My super creative friend brought the stuff to make this for their teacher.  I really want to make one of these at home, but the likelihood of going to Michael's today is slim.  Next year??
Date night!  I totally great and alcohol heavy Christmas party with friends-- LOVED IT
Jack got to bring his class mascot home for break.  I told the teacher I wasn't sure if we were ready for the responsibility.  Moments after this picture was taken, I exited the restaurant with a shrieking shit-covered baby.
Who slept through Trader Joes LUCKY HER
Her new favorite thing is trashing the cabinet

And waving Hi while saying "Haaaa"
Se is still compelled to do So Big whenever she sees the camera.
I did all the cookie prep the night before-- dough, frosting, everything
Cooper loved the flour bag.  His surface was very well floured.
 Hard at work
 Photo-benned
 Deocrating
 He worked so hard
 So did Harry
Harry made most of these for the fat man
 Jack did these
Despite my prep, the place was TRASHED, and Cookie Day took 6 hours.
 The cookies are delicious, though
 SO big.
This would have been way more fun were it not 9 degrees.
 Grimacing, not smiling.
Wish me luck-- I am about to take all 3 boys to the movies by myself, and I have a fever.  MERRY CHRISTMAS.
