Sleep tight

Ben texted me this picture of a napping (at 4:30 in the afternoon) Dorothy, and it was so sweet:
Also annoying because she told me very seriously that she did not want to take a nap after lunch, and I am so sick of dealing wit the nap drama and then the corresponding bedtime drama that I was all OK dude.  Just give me 15 minutes to clean up the kitchen and go play quietly.  She did, and I did, and she and Cooper entertained themselves while I got dressed for work.  But then Harry and Jack came home and needed help with homework, etc, and the wheels fell off the no-nap bus.  Luckily for me, right when things get crazy on Monday, Ben comes home and tags me out, and I skip off to work.

Tonight, though, I stayed late to attend a lecture, and I just got home and ate what I swear for real this time is going to be my last salami sandwich ever since the WHO was pretty clear about the dangers of delicious, delicious processed meats.  And since it was my last ever, I had American cheese, mustard, and tortilla chips on it-- the world's perfect sandwich.  And now I have to go pack lunches and go to sleep.  I am SO TIRED because yesterday at Target, I realized that I had not had lunch (THAT NEVER HAPPENS TO ME) (DO YOU THINK THAT'S WHY I WAS CRABBY?) yet, and it was like 2:30.  So I ordered a pumpkin spice latte at Starbucks because I have not had one yet this season because they are also toxic swill.  And I forgot to order it decaf (you know, since I haven't had caffeine since the day before Cooper was born).  I didn't realize my mistake until halfway through the store/drink. Last night, I fell asleep reading around 10:45 like usual, and I bolted awake at 11:40 totally refreshed and ready to start my day.  It took FOREVER to go back to sleep.

So, I will just say that Cooper's class playdate was super fun.  Including mine, we had 7 kids running around making pumpkin crafts and playing with all of the things.

Crabby crabby crabby crabby crabby

I had the shittiest, crabbiest day today.  It totally took me by surprise, too, because we slept in until 7:30 (yes.  yes that is sleeping in.  yes, that sure does suck, huh?), had a nice breakfast and a pleasant morning.  Ben took Jack to hockey with Dorothy tagging along, and the other 2 kids played happily while I cleaned bedrooms and bathrooms in record time and was pretty excited because I had big plans to shop for a class playdate we're hosting for Cooper tomorrow  and let the kids spend their Halloween Target gift cards from Ben's parents and carve pumpkins and go grocery shopping and throw together a crockpot soup.  I even thought that I would send an emails to my friends asking for cleaning lady recommendations because it would be much easier to make it through the hockey season with a once (or maybe even twice depending on how good she is) a week cleaning person because our weekends are going to fill up.  This is a big admission for me because I genuinely like to clean my damn house my damn self, and we have tried a lot of different cleaning services and have basically hated them but it would be so nice not to have to clean all weekend (even though cleaning is my zen).  But then Ben came home in a shitty mood, which pissed me off because I was anti-hockey practice today but I played along and was a really good sport about it.  And then I got in a funk and have not really been able to climb out.  I HATE that.  When I know I am being a bitch but just can't help myself.  And then the whole rest of this beautiful day was crabby.

I am a sucker for a kid in hockey gear.
He snagged this sucker out of a kitchen cabinet I was cleaning out and disappeared.  He played so well in his room today and didn't even mind that the bog boys wanted basically nothing to do with him.
Beatrix wanted to come out front and watch the pumpkin carving happen.
Dorothy decided she'd rather draw on hers.  Also, she is into rain boots even when it's not raining.
Jack looked through this carving book forEVER, but in the end, he just chose between circle, square, or triangle features like usual.
Harry wore holiday slipper socks all day long.  Because he is Buddy the Elf.
That's the happiest face I could muster.
They didn't even mind being elbow deep in guts. (I, however, did).
 Mine's the frown-y one, obvs.
ETA:  The final pics from today FINALLY uploaded.  I have been having trouble with my Phot app on my computer syncing with my phone over wi-fi, and there isn't a pattern to the malfunctions, and it's driving me nuts.  Ugh.

The kids and I are reading this book which was a childhood favorite of mine and of my mom's and they LOVE it!!
 I think I over-bought for a playdate craft.
See, you guys?!  I am so crabby that uploading these two pics was really important to me, but WHY??  I need to go to bed and wake up in a better mood.  Fingers crossed.

Wicked reprise

Jack has been jealous that I took Harry to see Wicked in 2013 SINCE 2013.  So, when the show came back to town, I knew we had to see it.  AND TODAY WAS THE BIG DAY.

(So, I have seen Wicked 3 times-- once before I was pregnant with harry-- about exactly 10 years today, once with Harry in 2013, and once today.  I gotta say, Ana Gasteyer was the best Elphaba I have seen, but Carrie St. Louis, today's Glinda, was my fave, even though she was a caricature.  And today's Fiero was the least good  Yeesh.  But the staging this time was great-- awesome dancing.  Oh!  And the wizard and Madame Morrible were both excellent.)

We headed downtown for lunch at Noodles (Jack wanted to go somewhere he likes) and stopped on our way from the parking garage to the restaurant at a huge candy store where we spent $18 on $2/pound candy.  Erm.  I guess we bought a lot of candy?

We had a leisurely, chatty lunch (buff bowls at Noddles are AMAZING) and then walked a few quick blocks to Jamba Juice, which might be Jack's favorite place in the universe.  We made it to the theater early, with plenty of time to find our seats (dead center which was awesome, mezzanine level which was meh) and position our candy bags so as not to be rude during the show (I chewed SO MUCH GUM).

Jack LOVED the play. He was totally adorable and transfixed and leapt to his to give a standing ovation at the end.

Winter is coming. Gulp.

 Winter is coming, you guys.

I mean, it was still warm enough for me to take a walk and let my hair dry on the way to volunteer in Jack's class (as you can tell from that line, I looked AWESOME today.  It will probably come as no surprise that I wore my exercise clothes all day long), but the little kids had to really bundle up to go to the park.

Spidey could barely see around his face mask to climb up the jungle gym.
It was so cold that Dorothy took off her sparkly pink crown headband to wear a hat, even.
Cutest moment of the day:  SHE READ A BOOK TO BEATRIX.  (Dorothy's class has book time evreyday where they sit on the blue rug and have silent reading time while their teacher sets the snack table, and now Dorothy;s favorite thing to do is read books by telling us all about the pictures.  She uses "And then" as a transition between pages; she always starts with "Once upon a time" and ends with a definite "The end.")
The boys and I capped off our day with Goosebumps.  It totally sucked, but the theater is all leather recliners instead of shitty movie seats, so there's that.

Cookies, conferences, and habits

I have made 96 of these cookies in the last 2.5 days.  AND THEY'RE ALL GONE.

Oh, sweet little Dorothy.  She is too much.

Harry and Ben had hockey practice last night, but the rest of us went to Culver's for a school fundraiser.  Last time our school had a fundraiser night, Dorothy barfed all over Chipotle.
THIS TIME SHE HAS PINKEYE.  Yum!
The boys asked me to take their picture by this weird bronze statue of readers outside the library.  Jack was trying to see what the statue kid was reading and was hyper annoyed to find that the book didn't really have words.

My week has been a little nuts because I have had a paper to grade and research conferences to hold for my class.  Normally, these tasks are NBD, but I have 40 STUDENTS this semester, so meeting with each of them for 15 minutes has been crazy!!  I have sat on my ass more this week than I ever do.  Any chance I get, I have been jumping up to take a walk outside or at least refill my water bottle.  Except, you know, RIGHT NOW.  I also spent a good 10 minutes putting books on hold for Jack at the library because his class has a read-in on Halloween Eve (no Halloween parties at our spoil sport public school which is how come the PTO has to throw one at night), and they can wear jammies and bring their favorite books.  His favorite book series is one he only gets from the library, and I was going to buy a bunch of it on Amazon, but middle child story short, I put them on hold instead.  Hashtag MOTY.

In any case, I am losing my weekly Fitbit challenge really badly this week.  My 62-year-old mother is, for example, a comfortable ten thousand steps ahead of me.  Blergh.

We had preschool conferences for Dorothy and Cooper, and I really LOVE their preschool.  It is sweet and adorable and play-based.  Cooper has started writing his name on everything, which neither Harry or Jack ever did, and he is doing so well, which thrills me because he is kind of a shrinking violet.  Dorothy is a force to be reckoned with.  Her teacher seems to enjoy her large personality, and Dorothy has totally changed in her dealings with other kids since she started school.  We used to be worried when she encountered a kid on the park or something because she was pretty rough and handsy.  Little Gym was kind of tough at the end of last semester.  But now!  Every kid she meets is "my fwiend."  Adorable.

Mostly, though, we loved conferences because Dorothy and Cooper got such glowing reports, which we are not used to AT ALL.  Since he was in once-a-week 2-year-old preschool, Harrison's teachers have been intimating that he has ADHD, and Jack is slow to meet academic goals.  Even though Cooper has speech therapy once a week at school, both he and Dorothy are well behaved and on-track or advanced developmentally, and that's a luxury we have never before experienced.  I left the school smiling with a bounce in my step.  So this is how other parents feel, I thought.  How awesome.

I finally got Gretchen Rubin's Better Than Before from the library, and you guys!  It is even better than I thought it would be and the inspiration for this daily posting.  I want to get back in the habit of coming here everyday.  I have also finally printed all the photos I have been neglecting to print since Dorothy turned 1.  I am always really good at printing pictures when I have an infant because I religious update the baby books on a monthly basis, but after that first birthday party, my enthusiasm wanes.  But now!  I am caught up, and I have made picture collages for my bedroom from our last 2 vacations, and I have bought frames for our family pics this year.  And now!  I am going to faithfully go through my Photostream monthly and print my faves.  So now all of my pics will be on one of my computers, on my time capsule, and on Shutterfly or Walgreens AND languishing in a box in my basement.  I'd feel better if they were ALSO in a safe deposit box, but that's because I am a little nuts.

As if you hadn't guessed.

Stuff and...

We have had some completely amazing weather.  As high as 80s on a recent weekend, but mostly in the 60s and 70s by day and the 50s by night.  It's been heavenly.

Ben and I have reverted to our old summer ways to never have to clean the kitchen and have been feeding the little kids lunch at the park and feeding everyone dinner outside at night.  If only it didn't get dark so soon.  Sigh.

We took advantage of warm weather to clown around at the pumpkin patch and pick some apples.  (Which right now are languishing on my counter even though I have already made muffins.  I hope to turn them into something fattening tomorrow).

We are doing this crazy thing that the rest of bougie America probably already does and are not letting the kids watch TV or play WiiU or hang out on Harry's laptop in the morning before school.  They have been filling their time really sweetly, and Jack pops out of bed to read a book and write in his reading log first thing in the morning because he is the sweetest.
Cubs Scouts.  Jack loves it but OMG is it a pain in my ass.  ANOTHER event to drag everyone to in the dark when it should be bedtime.  For the pack meeting at school the other night, I brought the supplies for Dorothy and Cooper to make Fruit Loop necklaces.  MOTY for realz.

(YOU GUYS!  One of our neighbors in Young Mother of Year, and my boys are SO IMPRESSED.  I referred to myself sarcastically as mother of the year, and Harry was really excited and said "Did you win, too"  L  O  L.)

Sometimes it;s cute to come upon your kids playing.
But sometimes coming upon the remnants of their play is creepy as fuck.
Other times, you see they've turned a tent into a cozy reading place with books for everyone and then it's cute again.
 Speaking of cute again...
Harry picked an interesting combo for school on Monday.
...Aaaand Dorothy and Cooper only want to sleep in costumes.

Wedding review: 10 years later

Oh I love this post idea that I have shamelessly stolen from Brooke.  She wrote a great post about what she loved what she would change about her wedding, and ten years later, I have a few ideas, too.

Still Love:
My huge poufy silly dress.  I went shopping with a grad school bestie JUST TO LOOK and fell in love with it and bought it on the spot even though it meant I missed the iconic dress shopping with my mom.  Then I lost so much weight that instead of altering it, I exchanged it for a dress 2 sizes smaller.  And then!  Instead of  hemming it all the way, I doubled up on crinolines. Double awesome.

My pink satin Kate Spade shoes.  They were such a splurge at the time, but I wore them for 10 years almost.  They broke on my birthday this year when I teetered drunkenly across the golf course on the way home from my party.

Our invitations.  They were black and white with a picture of a 50s-era couple dancing with lampshades on their heads.  We got matching Thank-You cards, too.  I LOVED them, but at the time, I was really annoyed that I didn't get engraved ones and had to settle for letterpress (LOL).  We had a calligrapher do the envelopes, too, which was a lovely touch I am still happy about.

Our vows.  We wrote them and they were funny and made us both cry. And!  We were married by a judge my mom knew.

The level of total debauchery at our reception.  Open bar, FTW.  Of course, it was at a hotel.  If I had drunk 11 vodka tonics anywhere else, I would be dead.  But at my wedding, I was bubbly.

Our post-reception activities.  No, not THAT.  We went to our suite and ordered a pizza from the bar next door and opened all of our cards and gifts while soaking our feet in the hot tub and pulling eleventy billion bobby pins out of my hair.  Our friends kept partying-- a couple even got engaged on our wedding night, which is pretty awesome.  But Ben had been out late the night before (members of his bridal party thought he was dead when they couldn't find him based on his condition last time they saw him, and he was hungover until he started drinking again before the ceremony), and we didn't eat much food at the reception even though the prime rib was as good as wedding meat  prepared by a hotel catering staff can be, so we opted for pizza and presents.

Our morning after.  We met our families and close friends at our favorite college brunch spot before going to my parents' house to open even more presents and then heading to Chicago to spend the night near O'Hare so we could fly to Cancun the next morning.

Our flowers.  All pale pink roses and calla lilies.  (Our colors were pink and green).

Our guestbook.  People signed a mat that we later put around a picture of us from the wedding.

Our post-wedding horse and carriage ride.  Duh.

That we put disposable cameras on all the tables.  Oh my goodness, those pictures are THE BEST.  My favorite was how my sister-in-law and brother-in-law took a selfie (before that was even a thing) on every camera.

That the whole night was a gift from my awesome parents.  Enough said.

Would Change:
Our photographer.  My dad and I looked at a bunch, and these guys had a lovely portfolio.  We got married in 2005, on the cusp of digital photography.  These guys used film, and we didn't realize how much that would really suck in just a few short years. Plus, they closed up shop and moved the China, and Ben and I cheaped out and didn't buy our negatives.  AND! The reason their pics looked so great in their albums was because they staged EVERYTHING.  We didn't know that and insisted on a more photojournalist approach-- we didn't even want to see each other before the wedding, and they were used to staging that big reveal.  And so, they kind of hated us/me.

Our programs.  My mom and I made these using clip art and had them printed at a local place and tied them with green and white polka dot ribbon, and they were cute, but now that we have Pinterest and Etsy, I bet they would have been even cuter.  My mom painted and decorated a white basket for them to be passed out in, and that was adorable and I would not change it.

The Venue.  We did the ceremony and the reception at the same hotel. It was convenient because a lot of people were also staying there, and I think that's partly why the night was such a glorious drunk fest.  BUT there was a way nicer hotel down the street that was booked on our day, and we just couldn't stop acting like babies enough to think about changing our date.  We also probably should have gotten married outside at the botanic gardens instead of under the world's ugliest chuppah, but who knew it would be 80 in AUGUST?  We were banking on sticky and 106 in the shade. BUT, the drinks were plentiful.  The food was delicious, and the whole day went off without a hitch, so it was a win.

The hair.  We booked a hairdresser for my room for me and a few girls and then also sent some of the girls to the hotel salon, and nether of those options produced good hair.  If I had it to do over again, I would take everyone somewhere better (even though my trial run hair was super).  I kind of freaked out because my day-of hair looked so shitty, and one of my bridesmaids (a high school bestie) was finally like, "I don't know what you want me to say.  I am not going to redo your fucking updo." So I got drunk and yanked on my hair to make it look messy.  It was fine. I heard that other girls sobbed in the bathroom of their rooms, and others ALWAYS untag themselves from the FB pics I nostalgically post every August 6, so I was not the only unhappy customer.

The DJ.  He did a great job (the night ended with everyone swaying back and forth in a huge drunk circle to Piano Man), but a band would have been even awesomer.

There were also some things that seemed like a huge deal at the time-- engraved invitations, chair covers for the reception, bridesmaids' tan lines, what everyone did with the pink shawls I made them buy with their mint green satin dresses, that everyone purchase their dresses at the same time so they could be dyed from the same lot of dye-- that obviously were shitty to get bent out of shape about.  But weddings can rob even the most practical people of their priorities, and I have never been accused of being the most practical of people.

I am sort of glad that only 1/4 of our kids is a girl because we will for sure pay for her wedding, and I hope it's as wonderful as ours was.

Married!
 Still married!
Lost my shoe getting into the carriage.  Staying classy.
 Making fun of the photogs.
 Yep.  Still making fun.
 And here, too.
Look!  An instagram filter before there even was instagram.
Might frame this and put it on my wall.
Chuppah with the fringe on top
Ben's vows were good.  And then he had a handkerchief in his pocket.  SMOOTH.

ETA:  THESE right HERE were our invitations!!
