swim fan

Since I started doing hot yoga on Monday mornings, it has been hard to find time to write a Monday post. No regrets, though, because I adore hot yoga, and the early AM Monday time slot is perfect.

I wake up at 5 and drink my first cup of coffee immediately (it is set to be ready when my alarm goes off) while reading a book for 10 or so minutes. Then I watch The Sopranos (doing a rewatch and am at the ed of season 3) and do a little retention outreach for my adjunct online class. At 5:50, I am out the door with Annabel for a 30-minute jog. I deposit her back inside the house, around 6:20 or 6:25 and jump in the car. Class goes from 6:45-7:30, and I come home in plenty of time to do a little morning tidy, lift weights, and leave for my 9:45 office hours.

Things that make this work:

  • Sleeping in my yoga clothes and adding a sweatshirt to run.
  • Putting my yoga mat, super absorbent towel, keys, and water in my car the night before.
  • Packing my lunch for work the night before.
  •  Encouraging Dorthy to pack her dance bag the night before and doing a quick check to make sure she has her shoes for class and her ballet bun tools in there.
  • Ben.

Today was a hard class-- lots of one-legged poses and ab-forward transitions. Really really nice broken wing moment at the end, though.

Ben, Cooper, Dorothy, and I all got our covid and flu shots on Friday at the pediatrician's office (Ben took Dorothy to her annual check up in the morning while I was chaperoning a first-grade field trip, and then I took Cooper to his in the afternoon-- Minnie goes tomorrow. Past me, who scheduled that shit show, is dumb), and we felt baaaaaaaaaaad on Saturday. Cold. Achy. Exhausted. But! We woke up feeling magically OK Sunday, just in time for MINNIE'S FIRST SWIM MEET

She was super nervous (especially about backstroke) but she did great!

Our club was hosting the meet, so I had to volunteer. I wanted to give out heat winner ribbons (and candy!) but I was too slow on the draw (you gotta click on that sign up genius the second it opens!), so I ended up handing out ribbons to the top 8 over all finishers in each 10U event. It was a 4-hour shift and pretty interesting. We don't bag ribbons for coaches at our club, so that means if you want your ribbon, you need to pick it up from the awards table after the event finishes. We got some flack from parents about that, but mostly, we got to give cute little dripping swimmers their ribbons, and they were pretty excited about it. Occasionally, a sad kid who didn't finish in the top 8 would come over and ask us to check for their name, and that was kind of a bummer. I was thinking I'd sign up for awards again next time BUT there is a LAUNDRY volunteer-- that person gets to pick up all the volunteer shirts at the end of the meet, wash them, and bring them back to the pool for next time. That sounds like the easiest volunteer job EVAR, and I am jumping in it for next time.

But, really, after helping run the All City dive meet this summer, I can volunteer for any role any time and not feel intimidated by the job-- swim mom era, here I come.
