1. How do people who run actual long distances find the time to do it??? We are doing a 5-mile race in April, so I have been working slooooowly through the Couch to 10K program, and this means that 3 days a week, I need to run for a little over an hour. IT IS SO HARD TO FIND THE TIME. This week, I fit it in on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays by running the hour between when Minnie goes to school and when I could drive Dorothy and Cooper to school. Last week, I did Monday, Saturday, Sunday, but that meant I had to get up early on the weekend because we had a bunch of stuff to do. Bah. I guess I will keep working it in where I can week to week. (The other 4 days, I do a quick 30-minute run, and this is way easier to schedule). How am I ever going to train for a half marathon if I never have time to RUN?
One excellent weather-provided tweak is that I have shifted some of my dog walking (we do 60 minutes a day minimum) to the after school hours, and Min scooters-- I could actually probably do a shorter jog this way, to...2. Can you even believe I let Dorothy talk me into this footwear combo?
(I will say this outfit was DARLING without the jacket, but I was trying to squeeze in a pic before anyone else came into the bathroom, bovs).
3. Why oh why am I always taking cold showers?
THE CLOUD OF STEAM that emerged from the bathroom after Dorothy was NUTS you guys. I was sitting on Minnie's bed while she read to me right across the hall, and I GASPED.
5. Do you think Annabel wanted to come along?

I don't run anymore but I remember my friend telling me how much time she took to train for a marathon. It is a LOT. It is a huge time commitment!
ReplyDeleteWait. Why ARE you taking cold showers??? Is it because Dorothy is using up all the hot water? For a while I was taking cold showers because I thought it was good for me, but I stopped doing that. There are enough other hard things in life, I don't need to make it any harder.
ReplyDeleteA lot of running plans make things needlessly complicated. If you're running every single day, you can keep most of your runs short. All you need is one longer run a week where you gradually build up the mileage. I would question why you need to be running over an hour three times a week to run a 10k? Especially if the program is designed to just get you across the finish line. If you have a time goal, you can still do the mostly shorter runs/one long run a week, but throw in a session of speedwork once a week (assuming your program includes this- if not don't worry about it). Seriously, trust me on this. I've trained for marathons this way.
Jenny is the queen of running, so I think her answer is solid.
ReplyDeleteACK on cold showers, they are the worst. I have a friend whose son takes cold showers on purpose because he thinks they are good for him, but wow, way to suck the joy out of life, right?
Do you like running longer distances? I guess I'm wondering if you are happy doing 30 minute runs and they fit into your (very busy) life well, if you need to increase mileage. Is this a goal that makes you feel excited, or is it something that you just feel like you should do? I think sticking to 5kish distance is great if that's what works well, lets you sleep more on the weekends, and you enjoy. If you love the long runs, that's great too! I'm not a runner, just curious what your rationale is for adding more distance.
ReplyDeleteI am Dorothy re: showers. I think I am Dorothy in most ways, to be honest.
ReplyDeleteI have nothing to add to the running discussion, but I would always defer to Jenny about those things. She's the expert!
