NME: August, I love you

 New! Month! ENERGYYYYYY!

August goals:

1. Get ready for back-to-school (Mentally. Plus buy shoes for all and first day outfits for anyone who wants one)
2. Help Jack apply to college (GULP)
3. Fix my blender or buy a new one
4. Book spa services at Sundara and finally use my bday gift card
5. Catch up on my Book of the Month books and read all my darn library books

So much to love about August:

  • School prep (the best part of the yeeaar)
  • Minnie's bday
  • Our wedding anniversary (TWENTY YEARS )
  • Annabel's bday
  • Summer's last gasp

We have a really easy August calendar:

  • Dance is over after 8/14.
  • The girls and I are all getting hair cuts.
  • I have a follow-up OB appointment and acupuncture.
  • Middle school has announced the dates of open house, and we are waiting on Minnie's kindergarten conference date. (Jack is taking care of HS registration on his own)

College applications opened 8/1!

  • Jack and I have a date to apply next weekend
  • He has already asked teachers to write letters and has told them he's going to apply crazy early
  • He figured out how to secure his unofficial transcript and knows who to ask about his official ones (his counselor retired at the end of the school year, so there might be a lag here
  • He's working on essay drafts right now
  • Like Harry, he will start his senior year with college apps done and dusted. I LOVE THIS!!! (He is applying to Bradley, UW-Eau Claire, UW- Lacrosse, and UW-Milwaukee). (UW-MKE is a direct admit school, but I have no idea if he checked the box to be directly admitted... I probably should have followed up on this with him, but he is more interested in the selective admission school, so I ... didn't).
I KEEP buying lunch boxes and food from school lunch displays because I AM A LITTLE BIT EXCITED ABOUT SENDING THE KIDS TO SCHOOOOOOOOOOOOL.

Ben is absolutely making fun of my lunch box purchasing-- it might be getting weird.

(I have bought two $3 insulated lunch sacks from Target-- probably for me-- a Loveshack Fancy knockoff for Dorothy (she DESTROYED her $40 Hydroflask lunch box last year, so no more expensive ones for her), 4 of the $2.99 insulated bento covers from the Target dollar spot (they fit Bentgo bentos and Planet Box Rovers, and they can be used as lunch boxes w/o bentos), and I bought Minnie a back up Cat and Jack bento so she can have 2 boxes in rotation (love Bentgo bentos, but Cat and Jack's are TEN DOLLARS, so I had to try) I have also stocked up on sandwich cutters in fun shapes and adorable ice packs. Plus a cute pouch for snacks for our after school runs and those viral Target pencil cases which are PERFECT for stashing snacks that should not get crushed in backpacks and activity bags.)

I AM READY to send the children out the door is what I am saying.

How can this little dolly be off to KINDERGARTEN????

  1. Happy anniversary!! I love August as that is when we go to my parents for a week and then the boys stay for another week of grandparent camp since we have a childcare gap. I need to get going on school supply shopping. I used to try to go with Paul but he really does not care about school supplies so it’s probably best to just go on my own.

  3. This post made me so happy. I live vicariously through you in terms of the pool because we do NOT have an easily accessible pool and I'm a bit salty about that because the summers are so dang hot now and I wish our town had a pool. Though, it would likely be soooo crowded.

I hate shopping for school supplies and love that we pay something like $40 and our kids are given their supplies. All they need is a bookbag and lunchbox. Actually, I think both my kids now need a zippered binder, too? But that's it. I love it!

  4. I love your lunchbox addiction, I hope it makes packing lunches more fun, at least for a while.

  5. It's going to be a whole new world when Minnie is off to kindergarten! (Like a very mini version of my empty nest?)

August is so bittersweet for me because, as you say, “last gasp of summer” and I just cannot even bear to think about what is coming for us in New England…..

This is Daria from momofchildren.com (NJ)
Rainn is off to kindergarten, too, so I will have both kids in one school therefore I will be living like a queen, yes?… lol no more two different pick ups for a while -whew. I already registered him back in March for kindergarten, so now just uniforms (a few red shirts, beige bottoms). He already has a backpack. I cannot believe he is going to kindergarten!! I honestly cannot wait.

  9. I'm ready for school to start also. Mostly I'm ready for Mini's internship to end so she's not grouchy and stressed. I'm making Curly work on college essay now ( I just read her rough draft - it needs some work). She's juggling college offers for b-ball and she's overwhelmed, but trying to keep her focused on THE school and not just THE basketball. Hooray for your August not being too wonky and for kids heading back to school with a routine, and apparently with a new lunchbox, or ten. ;)
