Speech nats and the return of SUMMER DIVE

Jack went to Richmond, Virginia, for the National Speech and Debate Association tourney last week. He left right after graduation and capped off his high school career with a week long trip with his favorite extracurricular friends and his coaches whom he adores. He had an absolute blast and did great.

Jack qualified for nationals in international extemp, and he was not even sad when he did not break into out rounds because he really wanted to compete his poetry program, selections from Dog Show by Billy Collins (it's wonderful, and I think you should read it if you haven't already). Jack had a lot of success in WI with that program over the season, and he was successful at nationals, too-- he made it to octofinals, which is SO SO COOL. And! He was next in to quarterfinals. He went 1, 2, 6 in the octo. WHAT WAS THE 6th place judge THINKING???

It is a big deal to break at nationals, and we are so so so proud of him

The team even had time to sightsee before their flight home

And now? SUMMER LEAGUE is upon us, and the All City Dive season is in full swing. Minnie, who gets to pool hop and try out every pool club in town, is most excited, but we all love it.

Is this not the most Madison sign that has ever Madison-ed???

  3. Yay Jack! I honestly have no idea what any of that means - break? octo? These are English things, but I don't know. Oh, well. I assume it means he did awesome because Billy Collins is THE MAN and so is Jack!

  4. Way to go, Jack!!! Such an impressive way to cap off his high school career! Do you have any videos of him performing his poetry program? I would love to see it.

That sign is very informative! I was unaware of the issues with spray on sunscreen! I kind of feel like my kid would never wear sunscreen if it weren't sprayable, though??? But it's good to know!

Your kids are awesome -- way to go, Jack!!

I love that sign as I am completely anti-spray sunscreen, as someone who spent my entire childhood getting sunburned. Blessedly my children have their dad's tans-easily complexion, but I'm still militant about sunscreen with them -- as they point out, we are the *only* family that doesn't use spray sunscreen. For an easier option, I do like the roll-on kind in a pinch (the sun bum brand is great) - perfect for sending to camps and the like!

  7. This is so fascinating about the spray sunscreen! I usually avoid using any sunscreen- I find we naturally tan up as we spend time outside in spring into summer, and sunscreen often isn't needed. But last week on the way to the pool for the afternoon in the blazing sun I realized that we should probably grab some sunscreen and ran into the Dollar Tree to grab some-- I hate it! Spray sunscreen is just terrible!
