Style Goals

This is the year that I am going to fill some gaping holes in my wardrobe! Seriously, some of these have been NEEDS for years, and I have no good reason for why they are unfulfilled.

1. Athleisure: You guys! I am IN LOVE WITH LEGGINGS. I have spent my whole life not wearing leggings and I think it was because I did not buy the RIGHT ONES. And (for me) the RIGHT ONES are Lululemon Wunder Train high rise (NO POCKETS). I want to like Align leggings but I need just a wee bit more structure. ANYWAY. I want to explore the world of athleisure more aggressively and find more delights like leggings and Hotty Hot shorts. (I know I love Lulu dance studio pants, and I am thinking I might need Align joggers, too). Maybe I ca upgrade my sports bras? Find more T-shirts like the boxy Athleta one I love? Am I ready to stick a toe into the TANK TOP waters? Question for you: do you actually exercise in your athletic wear? I do run in my Lulu shorts, and I would run in fancy sports bras, but I usually run in Target sweat pants and old T-shirts with a Northface fleece literally older than 4 kids zipped over the top, and I don't see this changing...

2. Spring shoes: Right now I go straight from one million pairs of Uggs (okay... 9) to one million pairs of Birkenstocks.  I have Rothy's-- do I need more? Some Madewell flats? More sling backs or kitten heels? THERE IS SO MUCH TO EXPLORE.

3. Shirts I can wear with jeans that are not t-shirts or sweatshirts. This is a HUGE hole in my wardrobe, especially for spring (and honestly has been for YEARS). I would love to be able to go out for dinner with Ben and have something to wear that's cute and easy to throw on. No more excuses! (for any of these categories, honestly).

recent date night fit (paired this with Ugg slippers because JANUARY) (will for sure wear this sequined skirt to work) (def wearing Dorothy's jazz tights)

  1. It's so funny because for YEARS, like we are talking at least fifteen years, all I wore were Wunder Unders. I loved them so much! I wore them to practice and to teach. But in the past couple of years I have really gotten into the Aligns. They are so soft. Mostly I wear them to exercise or to walk the dog, I don't really wear leggings as an outfit anymore. I used to - when I taught I would have a legging outfit and then have a pretty sweater overtop so it didn't look as athleisure as it was.

  2. Hi hi I love your blog and I LOVE this post. I also share your love of leggings and my RIGHT ONES are Lululemon Wunder Unders in the luon fabric with a super-high rise. Tragically, I have lost these pants...somewhere in my house (a feat; my house is like 800 sq ft). For me the luon fabric is key -- it's cottony and holds me in without compressing my internal organs. Lulu doesn't make these anymore but I hope to replace via poshmark. In the meantime, I have a 10-year-old, medium-rise Wunder Under and 15-year-old, low-rise dance pant. And yes, I exercise in these and wear them in real life so I really need to pick up another pair because the laundry situation is getting dire.

When I WFH, it's typical for me to dress in leggings + power y tank + cotton tee to do the school run and complete a long walk. Then, once home again, I replace the tee with a ballet wrap style sweater or medium-weight top that looks nice on camera. If I want to squeeze in a strength sesh over lunch, I remove the top layer again. I really like SPANX (did you know they make clothes?!) for the top layer athleisure-y stuff. Their cotton clothing is juuuust structured enough and the air essentials stuff hangs nice and slouchy/is a nice contrast to a tight legging. They're having an end-of-season sale right now and I picked up some skorts to try (to mix in w my hotty hots for the summer version of the WFH uniform!).

    1. Ok, this makes me feel better about how often I wear leggings when I WFH (which is... basically every day).I always feel like I "should" be wearing "real clothes" but the leggings are just SO COMFY. (I'm partial to the Aligns). Sometimes I feel like my husband side eyes me putting on my leggings yet again (while he puts on 'real work clothes' to go to the office), but I do the exact same thing you do. I love being in comfy clothes that can quickly and easily transition to a dog walk or lunch hour workout session!

I really like leggings from Azure fit and Vouri! I have had bad experiences with lululemon from a quality standpoint (though I know people still love them) so I don't buy lululemon any longer. Aritzia has a great dupe of the align leggings for anyone who does like those!

  4. Work out in the good stuff! I use a sportswear laundry detergent so my workout clothes aren't smelly and that way I can actually wear them for day-to-day too.

  5. You have 9 pairs of Uggs!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? I have to laugh at that! (I do really enjoy my one pair! So I can see the appeal. But 9 is quite a lot of Uggs!!)

  6. I am always, always on the hunt for shirts that are not T-shirts or sweatshirts. Just something CUTE that I can wear to a school event or out on a date with my husband. But that variety of shirt is so hard to find!

My kid conscripted my ancient pair of Uggs and now I kind of want a new pair.

I DO workout in my athleisure. Or I spend leisure time in my athletic wear. Not sure which. I wear mostly Athleta leggings and bras, Old Navy tops, with a few outliers thrown in here and there. I love Athleta stuff for being comfortable but also keeping everything in place when I am moving, you know?

For spring tops, I’ve had great luck with Stitch Fix sending me an entire shipment of printed “blouses” (feel old typing that but nice shirts) that I wear to work, with jeans, outs, etc. from a mix of brands.

  8. Cute tops: If you have a Nordstrom where you live, book an appointment with a stylist! It's FREE and in my experience (Seattle) they are very good with not upselling and bringing you exactly what you want - like, you tell them going in "I want cute shirts for date nights and I want to spend no more than $X per shirt, I hate v-necks [or whatever]" and they will bring you so many things you would never think to try!

    1. I booked a Nordstrom stylist for a trip to Vegas with my husband in 2021 (ie, after a year+ of pandemic WFH clothes) and it was a revelation. I recommend to everyone!

  9. I do not wear my lulu leggings when I workout. I do have some nice leggings (name escapes me, ugh- but a woman I babysat for sold them as a side hustle) and I will wear those for workouts. Cute tops and jeans is the bomb. I love cute tops. I trust you will have no trouble scoring some of those for your date nights.

  10. I definitely wear my athleisure when I'm working out! I don't wear a lot of leggings (because Florida) but I love my little athleisure shorts with a bigger tee.

    1. Oh! And I want to second using Stitch Fix for cute tops. I would definitely order a box and see what you get!
